music standThe first melody note in the first chord is the key. Most songs have an instrumental intro to establish tonality using the I and V chords. Most Pop songs use the 5 keys closest to the key of a song to change keys. The closest keys are im, V, vm, IV, and ivm. Modulate with the V chord of the new key and follow up with the I chord of the new key. To make a smoother transition, play a pivot chord before the V chord. Pivot or transition chords are in both keys. Two keys always have 2 or more chords with the same root note. The chords are major or parallel minor chords with the key of the same name. Always return to the original key after changing key in the bridge.
